Piano lessons in Derby...
My name is Dom Scohy.
I have 20 years of teaching experience, & have been performing for 15 years. I'm from Belgium & the son of an international opera singer. I started my first piano lessons at the age of 3 years old, & achieved a music theory & piano diploma at the Academy of Auderghem at 16. I then studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels.
I have more than 20 years of international teaching experience between Belgium, France, and the UK.
In Derbyshire, I have previously taught lesson(s) at Foulds/Forte music school, & Derby school of music. I have also composed music for shows in Brussels.
I am very passionate & enthusiastic. I am very comfortable with classical, jazz & pop. I teach theory individually or in very didactic & fun group lessons. In my spare time, I am the keys player of the Derby-based jazz/funk band Oobleck.
Piano tuition is like learning a poem in Japanese because it sounds beautiful & is great, but understanding what you are saying is even better - I will help you understand music entirely. I have students from Allestree, Mickleover,
Littleover, Belper, see my testimonials here. I have been DBS checked. Contact me for your first piano lesson, near Mackworth in Derby - contact me now!
My testimonials from my Derby students (Google reviews)
Dom is a brilliant musician and teacher. He adjusts to all levels, ages and preferences, from classical to jazz. In the current challenging circumstances he's been really flexible and responsible. He is genuinely enthusiastic about what he does and lessons have been really valuable and fun. I'd definitely recommend him!
Absolutely brilliant teacher! If you're thinking of playing the piano or wanting to improve as a pianist whatever level you are (beginner or advanced) I cannot recommend Dom Scohy enough to have piano lessons from. I've had multiple piano teachers over the years and I feel so lucky to have found Dom as a teacher. I had lessons as a kid but stopped at 16; I picked it up again at 25 in 2015 after having a 9 year break and started lesson with Dom. Every aspect of my playing has improved drastically in the past 5 years with Dom as my tutor; from my sight reading to my theory knowledge to technical performance. Dom makes learning piano extremely fun - I've had piano teachers in the past that have insisted on bland scale work and not letting me choose the pieces I want to play - Dom always finds fun pieces that are suited to my ability but are also challenging to help me improve as a pianist. With Dom I have learnt my favourite classical pieces (Beethoven/Satie/Bach) but also fun pop pieces I love like Kate Bush. Sometimes I go through a "jazz phase" where I want to improve my jazz piece playing and Dom has massively helped me with this (completely different style than classical). Thanks to Dom I also now have a vast knowledge of music theory which he taught me in a way which made it massively clear. Fantastic teacher, fantastic person. 10/10!! I hope to spend many, many more years being taught piano by Dom.
Brilliant pianist & tutor Dom is easy going and lessons are always relaxed. Very glad to have found him Would fully recommend to anyone looking to learn!

I used to teach music in a state school. Music is assessed twice a year. My work was to teach students to pass their exams, just like I do at my home in Derby now with my lessons.

Piano teacher in a private music school, close to the international Queen Elisabeth chapel. I had the chance to be part of masterclass of worldwide pianist such as Maria Joao Pires who is teaching at the Chapel. I learn how to adapt my teaching to my students, which I now do every day in Derby.

Ethnic Drums Teacher In An Autistic School "Les 4 Vents"
The work included, dealing with teenagers with on the autistic spectrums. We had to work on poly-rhythm which basically means that the group of approximately 15 teens were divided in different groups, and played all together with rhythms. Like a drums orchestra. My work here, now assists me to help students who are struggling with the rhythm, during my lessons in Mackworth.
